Founder + Lead Guide
Former U.S. Navy

I have been hiking since 1991 and have thousands of miles under my boots from the deserts of the Southwest, the volcanic landscapes of Iceland, the arctic tundra of Greenland, to the legendary Appalachian Trail.  As one of the few military trained guides in the industry, I have had unparalleled survival training and can navigate on land, sea or even in the air. I am not only certified as a Wilderness EMT, I also teach both the Wilderness First Responder and Wilderness First Aid courses.  The guides I hire share my passion for, and knowledge of the outdoors. It is my sincere desire to provide you with a unique adventure that will leave you with new friends and a lifetime of stories. Continued below…

I have always had a strong sense of adventure, a passion for exploration and believed that life should be lived without ever asking yourself “what if?” As a cadet in the University of Arizona’s Army ROTC program I joined the Battalion’s Ranger training program and soon found myself spending most weekends in the desert learning small unit tactics, land navigation, and desert survival under the tutelage of soldiers from the Green Berets, Delta Force, and Rangers. I marveled at the beautiful places we traveled to in order to train to fight and eventually had the epiphany that, “Hey, I can come here without the M-16.” My passion for the outdoors was born in the deserts and mountains of Southern Arizona and only grew from there.

I eventually transferred to the Naval ROTC and was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S Navy. As a Naval Officer I had the opportunity to fly jets, hunt submarines on a guided missile frigate and serve as a boarding officer charged with leading a 12 man team tasked with taking over ships in the Persian Gulf and inspecting them for contraband during the United Nations Embargo against Iraq. Returning to New York City in January 2001 I began a new life as a law student. January 2003 marked my return to active duty when I deployed overseas with a reserve gunboat/coastal warfare unit as part of Operation Enduring Freedom and in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. I returned to law school after my latest tour of duty and completed my studies. Admitted in NY and NJ, I very quickly realized that a desk job was not for me.

I started Gear To Go Outfitters in the living room of my Brooklyn apartment in January 2009. Gear To Go was the first full-service outfitter in NYC, offering Sales, Rentals, and Guided Trips around the world. I soon moved on to street vending and eventually a brick & mortar location. Gear To Go Outfitters was recognized as an industry leader and innovator but after 10 years of running what were essentially three businesses, I decided to focus on what I loved most, guiding! I sold Gear To Go in 2018 and launched International Adventure Guides on January 1st, 2019. It's been an adventure ever since and we'd love for you to join us.

Experienced Guide
Former U.S. Army

My love for the outdoors started at a very young age.  As soon as I could walk, my Dad had me roaming the hills of NW Pennsylvania, teaching me how to camp, hike, survive, and navigate.  Every minute I could spend outside, I was there! Exploring the tens of thousands of acres of National Forest outside our front door I developed that sense of adventure and the need to be outside that will never die. Continued below…

At age 17, that sense of adventure led to the U.S. Army where I spent the 25 years. My first duty station was with the 3rd Infantry Division in Germany, returning to the US, I was assigned to the 82nd Airborne at Ft Bragg, NC followed by a stint as a Drill Sgt at Ft Jackson, SC. I then left active duty to pursue an education in Aviation.

As my education was coming to an end, the Sept 11 attacks put an end to my aviation career before it started. In 2004, I rejoined the Army and attended the Special Forces Qualification Course. Serving as a Weapons Sgt on an Operational Detachment Alpha. This led to some of the greatest adventures of my life. With multiple combat and training deployments to over 40 countries.

I’ve had the opportunity to walk in footsteps of T.E. Lawrence in the Wadi Rum in Jordan, roam the jungles of South America, hike the valley in the Julian Alps where Hemingway served as a Red Cross volunteer and wrote a Farewell to Arms. I’ve been guiding since 2016 and look forward to sharing an adventure with you

James Brower

Experienced Guide
Former U.S. Marine

James grew up in NYC and joined the United States Marine Corps in 1999 and as an Infantryman served overseas in numerous deployments as part of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.  James was among the first Marines to arrive in Afghanistan after 9/11 and was even quoted in Stars & Stripes when a chaplain checking on Marine fighting positions on Christmas Eve called down into James’ foxhole and asked him if he had a bible in there with him.  James replied, “No padre, but I’ve got a f@# ton of ammunition!” Continued below…

Deployed again as part of the initial invasion of Iraq, James would return to the battlefield three more times, including Operation Phantom Fury (The battle for Falluja), serving as a Squad Leader and later as a Scout Sniper Section Leader.

After leaving the Marines James would later serve as a paramilitary contractor, fending off pirates near the Horn of Africa, and as an instructor teaching law enforcement personnel the finer points of close quarter battle, hand to hand combat, and active shooter response. James has been a licensed guide since 2015 and is a member of the Lower Adirondack Search & Rescue Team. He is trained in wilderness medicine and also works as a certified ski instructor at New York’s Belleayre Mountain.

When not leading folks on backpacking or hunting expeditions, James enjoys climbing, mountain biking, fishing, hunting, paddling, and skiing. With James you know you’re in the safest of hands and he’ll be sure to entertain you around the campfire with tales of his adventures.

I am a father, teacher and explorer. My love for the outdoors started at an early age. As a boy, I joined Scouts which nurtured my love of wild places, taught me to be a better leader and developed my sense of perseverance in the face of adversity. My troop and I backpacked the Sangre De Cristo Mountains at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. I was also a staff member at Philmont for two summers, leading hikes and teaching interpretive logging skills and by the end of high school I had earned my Eagle Scout award.  These early outdoor experiences taught me to trust myself, take calculated risks and made me feel humbled by the beauty of nature. For two years after attending college at Albany University in New York, I lived in Crested Butte, Colorado, where I was a ski instructor for small children as young as 3 to expert skiers looking to conquer double black diamonds. After living in Brooklyn and getting married, I began to teach English at Norwalk High School in Connecticut and received a grant to become a Fund For Teaching Fellow.

For my fellowship, I designed and traveled to the Pacific Northwest for a 30-day National Outdoor Leader School (NOLS) expedition where my team summited Glacier Peak (10,541 ft.) and rock climbed in Squamish, British Columbia. Upon completing the NOLS course, I designed a new elective, Environmental Justice in the 21st Century where students must complete an Action Research Project that highlights an environmental injustice in their community or the world. I am trained in Wilderness First Aid and have assisted two youth group trips to support Puerto Ricans after Hurricane Maria and Navajo Indians in Arizona.

I love new adventures, meeting new people, and exploring nature. On the weekends, there is nothing I like more than to pack a few sandwiches, put my son in our hiking backpack and head outdoors. In my free time you can find me deep in the woods hiking with my family or kayaking on Long Island Sound. I love to ski and explore new places. My bucket list includes summiting Kilimanjaro, seeing the Northern Lights, and tree skiing in Japan.
