Northern Lights Iceland Adventure (Custom)
Northern Lights Iceland Adventure (Custom)
We tailor this adventure to fit your needs. The following description gives an overview the experience. Contact us for more info.
Come experience the Northern Lights and explore the land of fire and ice! Though many of you have joined us for our summer Iceland adventure on the world famous Laugavegur Trek, winter in Iceland is a unique experience. Each day will expose you to a new aspect of adventure and culture in Iceland. From riding an Icelandic Horse in the shadow of a volcano, speeding through old lava fields like the astronauts of the Apollo program, hiking to view an active eruption or exploring a tunnel created by flowing lava, this winter adventure will have you telling stories for years to come!
We know that viewing the Northern Lights is on most people's bucket lists so we've planned this trip to provide an opportunity to enjoy this truly magical display nearly every night of our trip. Long nights and short days, combined with a location in the high northern latitudes, provide ideal conditions for taking in the Northern Lights. In fact Reykjavik is the world's northernmost capital city! Worried about the cold? Don't be, in fact NYC and Boston experience colder winters than Reykjavik, plus you'll have ample opportunity to enjoy geothermal pools and hot springs on this adventure.
We'll meet you at Keflavik Airport on the morning of your arrival and then take you directly to the the heavenly mineral waters of the Blue Lagoon Spa. The comfort package we provide offers you a towel rental, free drink from the poolside bar, and all the silica mud you can apply. There's simply no better way to overcome jet lag! After our morning of bathing in the warm geothermal waters we'll head to Reykjavik for a nice lunch before checking into our hotel. We'll leave you alone for a few hours to rest and then meet up in the early evening for a walking tour of Reykjavik followed by dinner at one of the city's many fine restaurants.
Day two of our adventure begins with an ATV tour where you’ll journey through the same lava fields along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge that attracted NASA and the Astronauts of the Apollo Program in preparation for the moon landing. We'll then head back to Reykjavik to check out the view from the Hallgrímskirkja, which you'll know how to pronounce by the end of the day, as well as the settlement museum which is centered around an excavation of a Viking longhouse and is a great way to get introduced to the history of Iceland's founding as told through archaeology and the Íslendingasögur, or Sagas of Icelanders.
We'll depart Reykjavik on the morning of Day three and begin our journey on the famous "Golden Circle" with visits to Geysir (the first Geyser known to modern Europeans), Gulfoss ("Golden Falls"), and Þingvellir ("Assembly Fields") which is not only the the crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge that separates the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, it also marks the location where the Icelandic Parliament met through the end of the 18th century. For lunch we’ve arranged for a tour of a geothermally heated/powered greenhouse that grows some of the most delicious tomatoes you've ever tasted. You'll have the opportunity to sample the local produce when you dine on Tomato Soup served on a buffet with sour cream, home baked bread, cucumber salsa, butter and fresh herbs.
Day four begins with a horseback ride through the valleys and lava fields surrounding the town of Hveragerði, followed by an optional hike into a magnificent geothermal valley. Passing waterfalls and hot springs, we may even have time to bathe in the warm waters if conditions allow. The Icelandic horses are known for their friendly demeanor and ease of handling, as well as their fifth gait, so no prior experience is necessary to enjoy this adventure. After a light lunch of homemade soup, bread, coffee, and cake, we'll head over to a nearby lava tunnel, a truly unique experience and a great opportunity to witness the inner workings of a volcanic eruption as one walks in the path of lava that flowed about 5200 years ago. Every winter spectacular ice sculptures are formed inside the entrance of the cave making the experience of visiting the lava tunnel even more breathtaking.
Most flights back to the States depart in the evening so you'll have time to enjoy more of Reykjavik on day 5 before departing for the airport. We know that you'll be leaving with new friends and great stories to tell for years to come!
