Iceland and the Askja
Iceland and the Askja
Leave the crowds behind and let us lead you on a unique adventure in Iceland’s remote Northern interior. This trip is designed for adventurers that have already visited Reykjavik and the South Coast but want to explore a more remote area of this breathtakingly beautiful island.
Your journey really begins as you arrive in the village of Husavik and enjoy the relaxing waters of the ultimate geothermal infinity pool right alongside the ocean. While in Husavik we’ll literally set sail as we cast off on an old schooner to visit both the local Puffin colony and if we’re lucky, Humpback whales passing through the nearby waters.
We’re headed deep into Iceland’s interior but first we’ll stop and enjoy Lake Myvatn, taking in scenic canyons and waterfalls along the way. This will be our launching off point, just as it was for the astronauts of the Apollo program when they left to train in the area we’ll be exploring. All puns intended!
As we load into our 4WD and leave the paved roads of the coast, our first stop is Herðubreið (Her-du-brey), Iceland’s national mountain. The journey continues as we cross streams and traverse the landscape to reach our mountain hut. We’ll get a hike in before enjoying a hot, delicious, backcountry gourmet meal.
After a hot breakfast and a hotter shower, we’ll leave the mountain hut for a hike over the mountains to the Askja crater and its smaller neighbor Viti. Viti contains a geothermally fed lake that is cooled off to hot tub temperatures by the glacial waters of neighboring Aksja. This is a truly unique experience, swimming in a volcano in the middle of Iceland with no buildings around, only nature’s beauty. We’ll enjoy a lazy afternoon at the lake before hiking back to our geothermally heated hut for a hot meal and a good night’s rest.
Returning to Myvatn, we’ll soak in the Nature Baths, hike around a volcanic crater, and tour geothermal mud flats before returning to Reykjavik the next day. On the way to the airport we’ll make a stop to take in the beauty of Godafoss waterfalls.
If you’re looking for a unique adventure that gets you away from the crowds of Reykjavik without carrying a heavy pack then this is the trip you’ve been searching for.
