Iceland & The Northern Lights

Iceland has certainly become a popular destination for viewing the northern lights but you might be asking yourself why?  The truth is that the aurora borealis are visible in many places that are near and above the arctic circle so why Iceland?

There are several answers to this question but I’ll start with the natural beauty of Iceland itself.  A truly unique landscape, Iceland is among the youngest landmasses on the planet and is in fact still growing.  Situated on top of a volcanic hotspot, or ‘mantle plume’ as it is called, Iceland is still growing and the landscape is often redrawn by volcanic eruptions in much the same way as an artist’s brushstroke changes a painting.

Another great reason to view the Northern Lights in Iceland is that there is simply so much to see and do so you’re not just sitting around your hotel room waiting for nightfall.  Think about traveling to a remote village in Alaska or Canada.  If the skies are overcast and the lights hidden from view your vacation can get pretty boring.

Iceland lies just below the arctic circle and boasts the northernmost capital city in the world.  If the lights are hidden from view you can still have a night to remember either lounging in the relaxing warm waters of the Blue Lagoon, enjoying fine dining in Reykjavik, or exploring the city’s shops and galleries.

Our Northern Lights Iceland Adventure allows you to not only see the northern lights, including from the comfort of a hot tub, but also has you racing across the gap between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, riding Icelandic horses, exploring the Golden Circle, venturing deep into a 5,000 year old lava tunnel, and then dining at in a Viking Long House.

“I took the northern lights trip to Iceland with International Adventure Guides and am happy to give it a five star rating.  Kevin Rosenberg knows his stuff.  His planning is meticulous and the trip moved along in a timely fashion, with plenty of adventure packed into each day.  Which is not to say that the pace was exhausting.  On the contrary, he built in plenty of time to relax and we had a delicious and friendly meal every evening.  Kevin did his homework and arranged activities both “touristy “ and unique.  We learned history and geology and ecology while having loads of fun.  He was responsive to the exigencies of Icelandic weather and special needs of his clients and always managed to come up with a “plan B” when needed.  I would eagerly take another of his trips.” Joy H (Brooklyn, NY)
